While bargain shopping at Goodwill, Cathy Barker came across the base of a patio table for only $20. Since she had wanted a new table, she couldn’t pass up the deal. “After that it was a personal challenge to see if I could make it look like it wasn’t a backyard project,” Cathy says.
In order to complete the project, Cathy used a jigsaw to cut a tabletop out of plywood and cement backer board. After applying adhesive, Cathy screwed the pieces together and then clamped them while waiting for the glue to dry.
Next, Cathy applied a flexible trim around the table edge and bonded it with Gorilla Glue. While the glue set, Cathy’s husband assisted her by holding the trim while Cathy secured it with finishing nails.
For the top of her table, Cathy decided on a mosaic look. She had a few tiles at home but found the rest at a local crafts store. To break the tiles, Cathy put them between layers of a towel and used a hammer. “Get a good pair of tile nippers,” Cathy advises anyone who wants to do a similar project. “They make it much easier to fill in the small spaces.”
Cathy used Laticrete SpectraLOCK epoxy grout to attach and grout the tiles. “It’s stain resistant and never needs sealing. This stuff is fantastic!” she says.
Once Cathy finished the table, the only thing missing was the chairs. Cathy used the chairs from her old patio set, spray-painting them to match her new patio table.
Tip: Safety first! Take your time and wear garden gloves while cutting tile; edges are sharp and it’s easy to cut yourself.
