Gloria Tomczak

By Danielle Peterson

To top off the decor in a bedroom, Gloria Tomczak looked up to the ceiling around a decorative chandelier. Gloria loves Victorian style and has turned the bedroom into a “ladies’ sitting room,” adorned with era-appropriate art and furniture.

Gloria added narrow gold wallpaper strips, then stenciled the rest herself. “I used regular acrylic paints and stencils from the local crafts store,” Gloria says. “In the center, I used molding to frame the insert.” By using the end of a paintbrush, she was easily able to add little dots for more detail.

Most of Gloria’s inspiration comes from ideas she sees on Home and Garden Television (HGTV) and from Creative Home magazine. Gloria’s husband even jokes they are the bane of his existence!

Gloria’s advice for those hoping to tackle a similar project?  “Be prepared to spend a lot of time on this project,” Gloria says. “There’s a lot of taping and measuring involved.”

Working on a ceiling can strain your arm, neck, and back. Be sure to use a right-height stepladder so you don’t have to overstretch. Gloria says: “I definitely needed a neck rub when I was done but it was worth the effort!”

Tip: To complete the look, replace a plain light fixture with one that fits the room’s theme.

Here’s another stencil look, appropriate to cottage style: Cherry Stencil.
