Jayne Blume

By Danielle Peterson

After returning to her hometown of Lubbock, Texas, Jayne Blume took her time house shopping. She finally found one she loved, but the 1954 home desperately needed some renovations.

Though Jayne gave her whole home a makeover, this bedroom is one of our favorites. She started the project by refinishing the hardwood floors and painting the walls. “I painted the walls pure white as a backdrop for my eye-popping vintage fabrics,” Jayne explains.

When painting a room, be sure to prepare the walls properly. Use spackling compound to fill cracks and holes; when the compound dries, sand it smooth. After cleaning the walls use painter’s tape to protect baseboards and other fixtures. Brush on a primer to prevent old marks from appearing through the new paint.

When Jayne’s prep was ready, she set out to paint. Next she bought 1960s-style fabric to create simple, yet decorative window treatments.  To create similar shades, the cut fabric the size of the window, adding 6 inches to the length.  Fold under all sides of the fabric ½ inch, then press.  Fold each edge under one more inch; press and sew. To create the rod pocket, fold the top under 30-½ inches, then press and sew.  Slip a curtain rod through the pocket and your shades are complete!

Tip: Even if your walls are already painted, always use a primer to achieve the most coverage—you may end up using less of the more costly paint!
