Lynde Mott

By Danielle Peterson

When Lynde Mott found herself with leftover stained glass from previous projects, she decided to make a backsplash for her kitchen. “The incredible mosaics found in Byzantine chapels, the ancient Roman baths, and the ruins of Pompeii have always fascinated me,” says Lynde. An 18th-century quilt also inspired her to complete the project.

To create a similar project, cut a painted board to the desired size then draw the design directly on the board. Create small pieces of glass and tile by placing larger pieces inside a pillowcase or the folds of a towel and hitting them with a hammer. Lay the broken glass on the design and once you are satisfied, use a craft glue to individually attach the pieces. Once the glue dries, grout between the tiles.

Lynde suggests using a pour-on epoxy to finish the backsplash. It seals the tiles while creating an even surface that is safe and easy to clean.

Tip from the creator: Be careful when grouting. “I found the most tedious part of this project to be polishing the grout off of every single piece!” says Lynde.

Tip: Working with broken glass can be dangerous. Make sure to take your time and wear garden gloves so you don’t accidentally cut yourself.
