Supplies
Template plastic
Template pencil
Small, sharp scissors
Blue washout marker
Fabric (100 percent cotton)
Thread (100 percent cotton that matches the color of your appliqué design)
Pins
Fine quilting needle

Directions
1. First, trace or draw your desired pattern onto template plastic using a template pencil. (Unlike a regular pencil, a template pencil will not smear.)

2. Carefully cut out pattern along pencil line.

3. Place template plastic pattern on the right side of your chosen fabric and trace using blue washout marker. Cut around the traced line, leaving about 1/4-inch seam allowance on all sides.

4. Hand press (tuck under) the seam allowance using your fingers. You may need to make small cuts along the edge of the allowance to achieve smooth results on curved lines. Now you have a design to appliqué onto your base fabric.

5. Pin the design in place on top of the base fabric. Baste near the edge to hold in place. Remove the pins.

6. Using thread and needle, hand-stitch the edge of the design to your base fabric using a very close slip stitch. As you work, tuck the hand-pressed seam allowance under to create the finished edge. Remove the basting stitch. Erase any blue marks by dabbing with a damp cloth. You’ve just completed an appliqué!
