The Upgrades

  • A low-maintenance laminate wood floor replaces beige carpet.

  • Corner hutches that mimic built-ins turn the fireplace wall into a true focal point. Unfinished pine hutches were stained, painted, and sanded for a custom look–and to save money.
  • Crown molding at the ceiling gives the room a finished quality.

    • The Decor

  • A machine-washable slipcover extends the life of the worn but comfy sofa.

  • Small trunks stand in for the usual coffee table. Their tops lift for storage.
