Tired of your boring backsplash? Revive it with paint! Find inspiration and color from curtains, tablecloths, or vintage red-and-white embroidered fabrics, as we did here. The pattern—checks, dots, and stars—is simple enough to re-create on tile, freehand.

Tools + Materials
• ruler
• pencil
• paintbrushes
• opaque ceramic tile paint, such as Plaid’s FolkArt enamels

Note: Ceramic tile paint is washable but not recommended for use with food; restrict your painted designs to the backsplash tiles and do not attempt to use on countertops.

1. Prepare the ceramic tile backsplash by cleaning it with soap and water; let it dry.

2. If working with large ceramic tiles, use a ruler and pencil to mark smaller squares. Paint a checkerboard design in red and white with ceramic tile paint.

3. Once the squares are dry, add a design. We painted the star and dot pattern freehand with a small brush. This requires a steady hand and produces a wonderful hand-drawn quality. If you’re not comfortable painting freehand, make a stencil to use as a guide. Let dry.
