How To | Work With Wood | Build Lattice
Build Lattice
Build your own square lattice, perfect for cottage- or contemporary-style gardens.

Tools + Materials
Pressure-treated ¾x¾-inch boards
Yardstick
Ruler
Pencil
Drill
1¼-inch drywall screws
Square

Getting started
To build a lattice with 6-inch square openings, first determine the finished size in inches (length and width) of the lattice and divide each number by 6 to determine the number of boards needed.

1. Working on a flat surface, lay out half the boards horizontally. Align the ends of the boards against a yardstick and space the boards 6” apart. Starting at one end of the top board, use a ruler to mark a line at 6 inches. Measure ¾ inch from the first mark and mark another line. Continue marking the board at 6- and 6¾-inch intervals. Repeat the marking on all the horizontal boards.

2. Using the pencil lines as a guide, lay the remaining boards perpendicularly over the horizontal boards to create a grid.

3. Drill a pilot hole in the center of the overlapping boards. Use a 1¼-inch drywall screw to attach the two boards. Continue attaching the remainder of the first board to the underlying boards.

4. Check your work with a square before moving onto the next board. It’s easier to redo one row rather than the entire lattice! Repeating attaching the remaining boards.

5. Carefully flip the lattice over to reveal the front. Ta-da—you have an easy-to-make lattice!

Tip: Prime and paint all sides of the boards before you assemble the lattice.
