How To | Sewing | Embroider a Towel

Embroider a Towel

Design your own holiday scene on a basic towel with these step-by-step directions and free downloadable pattern.

Embroidered Towel Materials:
Water-soluble marking pen
Pink flour-sack towel
Embroidery hoop
Embroidery needle
Embroidery floss: 1 skein each of white, brown, dark green, light green, burgundy
White four-hole buttons: one 3/4 inch, one 1 inch

Embroidered Towel Directions:
1. Download the pattern here. Using a marking pen, trace the pattern onto the towel, centered and 2-1/4 inches from the bottom (front) edge.

2. Use a full strand of floss for all embroidery. Place the design in the embroidery hoop and then work white running stitches for the snow mounds, brown satin stitches for the tree trunk, and long, thin dark green cross-stitches across the width of the tree. Add five or six light green straight stitches diagonally over the cross-stitches (the stitches will get shorter as you work your way from the bottom to the top of the tree). Note: When working the tree, do not carry your embroidery threads across the back of your work.

3. For the snowman, attach buttons at Xs on the pattern using embroidery stitches to secure them as follows: work a burgundy cross-stitch into the holes of the large “body” button and a burgundy straight stitch for the mouth and two brown French knots for eyes into the holes of the small “head” button. Carefully press the finished piece.
