How To | Sewing | Basket Liners

Basket Liners

Identified by a machine-embroidered label, these fabric liners make baskets the perfect place to tuck project materials away.

Cutting the Fabric
From desired fabric and using Measurements A and D, cut one rectangle for the liner sides. With wrong sides facing, fold one long edge under at the desired height of the embroidered flap (Measurement B); press the flap. Unfold the flap and finish-stitch the long edge of the flap.

From desired fabric and using Measurement E, cut the liner bottom.

Embroidering
With right sides together and the flap open, sew the two short sides of the liner side strip together to make a cylinder as shown in the illustration, below. Press the seam open. Fold the flap over.

If your sewing machine has embroidery capabilities, program an alphabet to sew the word on the flap. Center and mark placement guidelines with an air-soluble marking pen.

If your machine does not have embroidery capabilities, use a computer to type the desired word for the embroidered flap (we used 1-1⁄8-inch-tall letters for the large basket and 3⁄4-inch-tall letters for the small basket).

Print the word onto white paper and cut out the word.

Position the word between the fabric layers of the flap and center it along the strip as shown in the illustration, below. Using a light table or a sunny window, trace the word onto the flap using an air-soluble marking pen. Remove the paper and hem the flap.

Fuse the stabilizer to the wrong side of the flap. Position the fabric and begin embroidering the motif onto the flap through both fabric layers. Test all motifs by making a sample first; adjust thread tension or size if necessary. If using machine embroidery, program the machine to execute the stitching of the word. If not using machine embroidery, use a wide zigzag stitch with the
shortest stitch length available to fill in the letters of the word.

Trim threads and remove the stabilizer. Dot thread ends with seam sealant to secure the stitching.
