Buying a Sewing Machine

What Can You Afford?
Now for the tough part—how much can you spend? With machines ranging in price from $99 to $6,000, it’s hard to know where to start. The Home Sewing Association recommends that you “define your budget and stick to it, and be realistic about your financial commitment.” The association points out that limiting your budget too strictly might not get you the accessories that you want or need, but overspending might lead you to feel guilty or overwhelmed by the investment you’ve made.

Jewell agrees, and adds that you should consider what the price of the machine includes. If a higher-priced machine also includes a thorough warranty, a service plan, and other features that will help you enjoy your machine for many years, then perhaps the extra money is worth it. In addition, ask a dealer if he or she sells used machines. Many used models are in excellent working condition, and some still carry warranties or service plans.
