You'll find helpful tips here for everything from stuffing a plump pillow to making perfect ruffles.

COVERING BUTTONS
A covered button is a perfect focal point in a pillow center. Start with a kit for covering buttons, available in the notions department at a fabrics store. Numerous sizes are available; larger sizes (1–2 inches) are easiest to work with and lend drama to your project.

From fabric scraps, cut a circle 5⁄8 inch larger than the button form. Baste around the circle, using large stitches and leaving long thread tails. Fold the fabric over the base, gathering threads tightly and securing with a knot. Position the button back over the covered top, pressing firmly.

TUFTING WITH COVERED BUTTONS
Following the instructions for covering buttons above, cover two buttons in fabrics that coordinate with your pillow or cushion.

On the front and back of your pillow, mark the spots where the buttons will go. Slip a length of cotton embroidery floss or upholstery thread through the eye of a long needle; double it over. Sew on matching marks from the back of your pillow to the front, leaving the threads long on the back. Sew through one button shank and then through the pillow to the back again.

Sew through the other button shank, and then through to the front. Sew through to the back again. Clip the thread to remove the needle, leaving ends long. Pull tightly on the threads so the buttons sink into the fabrics. Tightly knot the threads several times, keeping them taut while knotting. Trim the excess threads.
