STRAIGHTENING THE GRAIN
Sometimes the fabric you buy will have a pattern that does not run straight with the grain of the fabric. Determining the straight grain before you measure or cut will help you avoid problems when you get further into your project.

Working from one cut edge of the fabric, gently pull on a crosswise grain thread, with the intent of pulling that thread out from the fabric’s weave. The pulled thread will reveal the true grain of the fabric.

It may be necessary to unravel several threads before being able to pull one thread that spans the entire width of fabric. The thread may break in the process of pulling. Depending on how far through the crosswise grain the thread has been pulled, the correct crosswise straight of grain may have become visible, even though the thread has broken. If not, start again with another thread.

Using scissors, cut the fabric on the “exposed” correct crosswise grain. Use this “line” to make straight cuts on the fabric for pillows, curtains, or other home accessories.
