MATERIALS
1 yard of fabric
Polyester fiberfill
1-1⁄2 yards of 1⁄4-inch-diameter cotton piping cord
Needle and coordinating thread
The finished pillow measures 16-1⁄2×7 inches.
INSTRUCTIONS
Note: All measurements include 1⁄2-inch seam allowances unless otherwise noted.
From the fabric, cut two 17-1⁄2×8-inch rectangles for the pillow front and back. Referring to the instructions for making covered piping, cut enough 1-1⁄2-inch-wide bias strips to make a 1-1⁄2-yard length. Cover the piping cord and sew the strip around the cord to make one continuous length.
Beginning at the center of one long edge, pin the piping to the right side of one panel, aligning the raw edges. Where the piping meets, overlap the ends 1 inch and cut off the excess. Remove the stitching from the fabric cover in each end. Unfold the fabric and cut the ends of the cord to meet. Refold one cover end under the cord. On the remaining end, turn the cover under 1⁄2 inch and refold the fabric around the cord, concealing the raw ends of the fabric cover. Using a zipper foot and a long stitch length, baste the piping to the front panel; pivot the stitching at the corners.
With right sides together and the raw edges aligned, pin the front panel to the back panel, sandwiching the piping between the layers. Using a zipper foot and a normal stitch length, stitch the back to the front along the basting line; pivot the stitching at the corners. Leave a long opening in one side for turning. Clip the corners. Press the seams.
Turn the cover right side out, pushing out the corners. Press. Firmly stuff the pillow with polyester fiberfill, paying special attention to the corners. Hand-sew the opening closed.
