How To | Sewing | shower curtain

shower curtain

Customize your bathroom with a one-of-a-kind shower curtain. This design will cover the opening of a standard-size shower. Increase the measurements if you want to encircle a claw-foot tub on all sides or if your shower isn't standard size.

MATERIALS
6 yards of 56-inch-wide fabric for curtain
1 yard of 56-inch-wide fabric for trim
Nine 3⁄8-inch grommets
2 yards of rickrack trim
Sewing thread to match
Shower curtain hooks

INSTRUCTIONS
From the curtain fabric, cut two 75-inch-long pieces the full width of the fabric. Cut one 59-inch-long piece the full width of the fabric.

From one of the 75-inch-long pieces, cut one 17-1⁄4×75-inch piece and one 17-1⁄4×59-inch piece. From the trim fabric, cut two 16×37-1⁄4-inch pieces.

For the curtain front, layer one 56×59-inch piece and one 17-1⁄4×59-inch piece with the right sides together and one long edge aligned. Pin together along the long edge and sew using a 5⁄8-inch seam allowance. Press seam; unfold and press seam allowances open.

Layer the two pieces of trim fabric with right sides together. Pin along one short edge and sew using a 5⁄8-inch seam allowance. Press seam; unfold and press seam allowances open.

Lay the trim piece on the curtain front, right sides together, aligning the top and side edges. Pin together along the top edge and sew using a 5⁄8-inch seam allowance. Press the seam; unfold and press seam allowances toward the darker fabric.

On the curtain front, pin rickrack trim over the seam. Sew to the curtain.

For the curtain lining, layer one 56×75-inch piece and one 17-1⁄4×75-inch piece with right sides together and one long edge aligned. Pin together along the long edge and sew using a 5⁄8-inch seam allowance. Press the seam; unfold and press the seam allowances open.

Layer the curtain front and the curtain back with right sides together and all edges aligned. Pin around all edges. Sew together using a 5⁄8-inch seam allowance on the sides and bottom and a 1-3⁄4-inch seam allowance at the top; leave a 6-inch opening on the bottom for turning. Turn the curtain right side out.

Press along all seams. Topstitch 1⁄4-inch from all edges. Topstitch again 1-1⁄2 inches from the top.

Install grommets across the top edge of the curtain, evenly spaced about 1 inch from the top. Insert the shower curtain hooks through the grommets.
