It’s not easy being drab. This colorful deck makeover will inspire you to rejuvenate your outdoor entertaining space.

Weather and time take their toll on a wood deck. A vigorous cleaning and colorful deck sealer can make a big difference. To put this deck on the mend, the homeowners made minor wood repairs such as patching holes with wood filler, sanding the patches smooth, and sinking protruding nails with a nail set. They switched out the spindles for cedar lattice and power-washed the entire deck.

After the wood dried for 24 hours, they stained it. To create an “area rug,” a grid was taped off and stained dark blue and green.

After the pattern dried, the homeowners stained the rest of the surface light blue.
"To furnish your deck, rescue sturdy metal or wood items from flea markets, garage sales, or thrift stores. Primer and exterior paint will give them a second life."
