Railing and posts, as the most visible part of a deck, add a great deal of style and character. That’s why the homeowners gave careful attention to these easy-up details.
Lattice Railing
New lattice railing coordinates with the existing lattice wall and suits the chunky structure of the supporting posts and rails. The grid took about $40-worth of rough-hewn cedar. The dark blue stain covers the lattice grid, and the light blue stain coordinates the deck posts and rails with the floorboards.

Post Toppers
Post caps placed on each corner post complete this spiffy deck makeover. Decorative caps come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can include light fixtures to illuminate the space.
"It’s a jungle out there! If you want to liven up your deck but don’t want to construct built-in planters, place large potted plants along the perimeter." — editor Kelly Rawlings
