Bamboo struts in the upper portions create a fun tropical or Asian accent. These pieces are just 3 ⁄ 4 inch under in diameter and are spaced 2 inches apart. The simple frame made from 2x3 cedar is assembled with glue and deck screws; before assembly, drill holes in the upper and lower rails to accept the bamboo pieces. Click here for an illustration
To protect the bamboo against premature weathering, spray it with a clear exterior varnish. Check local garden centers for bamboo, or contact Gardener’s Supply Co.; 888/833-1412; www.gardeners.com.

TIP: Frames made out of 2x3 cedar stock are thick enough to allow direct fastening with deck screws. Drill pilot holes in the frame so the wood won’t split when the frame is attached to the posts. To attach the frame, drive the screw at an angle into the post as shown.
It’s easy to assemble the basic fence. Check out the next page.
