Add Drainage Holes to Containers

Turn old watering cans into showy containers for your front stoop. Plant several with double pink and single purple petunias for an explosion of color. With good sunlight and enough water, they’ll perform all summer. Don’t forget to add drainage holes in the bottoms of the cans.

Tip: If your container doesn’t have drainage holes, drill 1/2-inch holes in the bottom, allowing one hole for every square foot of surface. Place fine-gauge mesh, such as window screen, in the bottom to keep the soil in place while permitting the water to drain.
