Tools + Materials
wool sweaters
washing machine & dryer
pillow form
scissors
straight pins
thread and needle or sewing machine
buttons (optional)
1. Wash each color of sweater separately in hot water. When the cycle is complete, dry each color separately in a dryer at the hottest setting. The heat of the dryer will shrink the wool sweater into thick felt that won't fray even when cut.
2. Using the pillow form as a size guide, cut one large square or two rectangles that slightly overlap for the back of the pillow.
3. Cut out shapes and arrange them in a pleasing design for the front, pinning pieces in place. Sew the pieces together by hand or use a machine. (For a no-sew version, join the pieces with iron-on fusible interfacing.)
4. Sew the front to the back, leaving an opening for the pillow form. Insert the pillow form. Slip-stitch the opening closed, or cut buttonholes and sew on coordinating buttons to fasten the cover.
Tip: If desired, use fabric dye at the start of Step 1 to change the color of the sweaters.
