Country Bench
How to give an aged-look finish to a bench.

Go back to slideshow

Tools + Materials

  • ready-to-finish bench
  • primer
  • latex paint (we used red and blue)
  • paint brush
  • white wax candle
  • sandpaper, medium-grit
  • tack cloth
  • polyurethane sealer

    1. Prime and then paint the bench with the base color and let dry. Rub the candle along the grain, liberally coating the edges.
    2. Paint the bench with the second color; let dry.
    3. Sand the bench with the sandpaper until the base coat shows through as desired (the wax makes this easier). Wipe the piece with the tack cloth to remove any particles and dust and then protect the paint with two coats of polyurethane.
