garden towers
How to make these garden towers.

Go back to slideshow.

Tools + Materials

  • various china and ceramic items
  • clear plastic film
  • all-weather contact adhesive
  • rebar, cut to size
  • bricks
  • sand

    1. Choose items that coordinate well in terms of texture, color, and shape. Select a heavy piece with an opening (a garden pot or vase, for example) and invert it for the bottom of the tower.
    2. Seal the spouts and other openings (except for the base) with clear plastic film and all-weather contact adhesive, such as Amazing Goop Marine, to keep water from filling the interiors.
    3. Glue together two of the items. Select components with smooth or straight surfaces to ensure a good contact point and help hide the glue. Use a paper towel to wipe away any glue seepage. Repeat with the remaining pieces to form more two- to three-piece sections of the tower. Let dry overnight.
    4. Glue the sections together. Check each section with a level before attaching it to the next one, so you can adjust the pieces to ensure the overall tower is straight. Use saucers (face up or inverted) as transition pieces between items of different shapes and sizes. Let the glue cure for three days.
    5. To install, bundle three or four pieces of rebar and bury in the ground, with enough protruding to fit in the base of the tower (enlist a friend to help you lift the tower). Fill a circle of bricks with sand to create a stabilizing nest, which you can hide with plantings.
