Storage Tip of The WeeK
Mail Sorting System
Sew a flirty pocket on a bed skirt for storage.

Practical and pretty, the pockets of this bed skirt are the perfect place to store books, remotes and eyeglasses.

What You’ll Need:
  • White cotton fabric that measures the width and length of our box spring plus 1 inch
  • Cotton fabric for side and foot strips
  • Straight pins
  • Contrasting fabric for pockets and flaps
  • Tape measure
  • Thread and needle or sewing machine

INSTRUCTIONS:

Note: Many beds are different dimensions. For this project, we used a bedspring that measured 54x74-1/2 inches with a 15-inch drop to the floor. Remember to make the adjustments to your skirt after measuring your box spring.

  1. For the piece that fits between the springs and the mattress, cut white cotton fabric to 54x74-1/2 inches. Cut one strip of 16-1/2x144-inch fabric for the foot of the bed and two strips of 202-1/2x16-1/2-inch fabric for the sides.
  2. Put straight-pin markings in the strips at 2 inches in to begin the side strips and then at 9 inches, 9 inches, 9 inches, 2 inches, 9 inches, 9 inches, 9 inches, 2 inches, and repeat.
  3. When all pins are in place, steam-press the five pleats for the foot of the bed and seven pleats for each side of the bed. Don’t stitch them in place. Leave 2 inches at the foot-end of the side strips for the corners and 2 inches at each end of the foot strips.
  4. To make the pockets, cut 9x9-inch squares of a contrasting fabric. Fold in and press 1 inch all around to make a finished 7-inch square. Topstitch all sides.
  5. To make the flap, cut 8x3-inch strips of fabric. Turn all edges under 1/4 inch and again 1/4 inch, then press. Topstich all sides. Open the pleated and pressed strips, being careful not to flatten the pressed seams.
  6. Measure and sew the pockets in place starting 5 inches from the bottom raw edge of the dust skirt. Overlap the flaps about 1 inch on the pockets and stitch along the top edge to secure.  Press all pockets. Fold under a 1/2-inch hem and fold under again 1/2-inch on all strips, then top stitch.  Press the hem.
Hem the sides of all pleated strips. Re-pin all pleats and press again if necessary. With the right sides facing, attach the strips to the large white cotton base piece and sew all pieces together, using 1/2-inch seam allowances. Put the skirt on your box spring top, between it and the mattress. Remove all pleat pins.
