Storage Tip of The WeeK
A Mudroom Solution

Using recycled materials never felt—or looked—so good!  Most people would never guess that this mudroom storage bench once was a kitchen cabinet. Here’s how to complete the transformation:

What You’ll Need:
  • Cabinet
  • Sandpaper
  • Tack cloth
  • Latex paint
  • Polyurethane
  • Paintbrushes
  • Small chain
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Decorative knob
  • Foam cushion

Begin by gently sanding the cabinet to even out the surface and remove any old paint. Wipe down the cabinet using the tack cloth, and then apply a coat of latex paint in the color you want. Once the paint is dry, apply two coats of polyurethane; let dry between coats. This will give the bench easy-care, wipe-clean livability.

Find a chain long enough to allow the bench door to open completely but short enough so the door doesn’t fall when opened. Screw the chain into the inside wall and door of the cabinet. If desired, add a decorative knob to the door and a foam cushion to the top. Your new storage bench is ready to use!
