Storage Tip of The WeeK
Decorated Storage Tray Idea
Make storage stylish with trays that reveal your design sense.

Use decorative paper and some wallpaper paste to hand-wrap plain-Jane storage trays.

Materials:
  • Tray
  • Sandpaper
  • Small brushes
  • Primer
  • Straightedge and triangle ruler
  • Crafts knife
  • Decorative paper
  • Wheat wallpaper paste
  • Bone folder
  • Acrylic sealer

How to cover the tray:
1. Lightly sand the tray. Wipe clean, paint with primer, and let dry. Measure from the inside base of the tray, up and over the sides, to the outside bottom. Measure the length of each side. Add 1/2 inch to all measurements.

2. Cut decorative paper pieces according to your measurements, using a straightedge and a crafts knife. Cut the inside base piece 1/8 inch smaller on all sides.

3. Apply paper to a short side. First brush wheat wallpaper paste on the wrong side, halfway up the paper. Then position the pasted half of the paper on the outside of the tray side and smooth with a bone folder. Cut corners at a 45-degree angle with a crafts knife. Trim unpasted portion of paper width to fit the inside. Brush the rest of the paper with paste; wrap it over the top edge, down the inside of the side, and onto the inside base Press in place and smooth.

4. Repeat step 3 to cover the remaining sides.

5. Brush paste on the inside base, and then carefully lay paper in the tray and smooth. Let dry overnight. Cut out the handle holes with a crafts knife. Apply two coats of acrylic sealer, letting sealer dry between coats.
