Materials
acetate
permanent marker, medium tip
painter’s masking tape
two small sea sponges
wall glaze in red and green
crafts knife
paper towels
artist’s paintbrush
brown crafts paint
1. Enlarge the cherry template on a copy machine to the specified size. Place the enlarged cherry motif under a sheet of acetate. Use the permanent marker to trace the design onto the acetate and lightly color in the shaded portions. Carefully cut out the shaded portions with the crafts knife.
2. Use the painter’s masking tape to attach the stencil to the wall. Consider slightly angling the design for more interest. Dip one of the sea sponges into the red glaze. Blot excess glaze on a paper towel, then dab the sponge over the cherry portion of the stencil, as shown here.
3. Dip the second sea sponge into the green glaze. Blot excess glaze on a paper towel, then dab the sponge over the leaf-and-stem portion of the stencil, as shown here. Allow the paint to dry for a few minutes, then move the stencil 12-18 inches away and repeat steps 3-5.
4. When the red and green glazes have dried completely, use the artist’s brush and brown crafts paint to draw veins in the leaves and to highlight the stem and cherries, as shown here.
Tip: For a wallpaper look, stencil partial designs at the edges of walls, windows, or doorways so it appears the cherries are "cut off" by the molding or empty space.
