Tools + Materials
tape rule
level
pencil
painter’s masking tape
light and dark yellow and white latex paint
paintbrush + paint roller
lath strips, cut to size
nails
1x4s, cut to size
screws
wood filler
putty knife
sandpaper, fine grit
1. Measure and mark a horizontal line 2 or so feet down from the ceiling. Apply painter’s masking tape to the line to define the top section of the wall. Paint the wall above the tape with the light color and let dry.
2. Then paint the lower section in a darker shade from the same paint chip.
3.
Paint the lath strips to match the darker color, and paint the 1x4s white. Nail the laths to the wall 15-18 inches apart.
4. Finish the top and bottom with white 1x4s screwed into studs. Fill nail and screw holes with wood filler, let dry, lightly sand, and touch up with paint.
Tips: As you plot out lath spacing, start at the center of a focal point wall or over the center of a door or window, and work your way out. Avoid lining up the laths with the edges of doors, windows, or walls. Make up for too little or too much space by fudging the distance between laths at the corners.
