Room by room | kitchens | a new look for old tile
a new look for old tile

Make your old backsplash look like new again without the high prices.

Update an existing tile backsplash by replacing a few plain field tiles with fancy decorative tiles. Click to see more of the backsplash.  We used glass mosaic tiles here, but you also can use embossed or painted tiles.

Tools + Materials
hammer
putty knife
decorative tiles
tile adhesive
grout
sponge

1. Begin removing the old tiles by using a hammer to carefully break a few selected tiles.

2. Use a putty knife to pry underneath the broken tile and remove it.

3. Install the new tile or tiles using tile adhesive or mastic, and let the adhesive dry as recommended by the manufacturer.

4. Grout the seams. After 15 minutes, wipe off the grout residue with a wet sponge. Let dry.
